New Driver? Sponsor
Changed?...... The new season is
fast approaching and with that generally comes new drivers and new sponsors.
Modifiedsprints.co.nz has now put a "Driver Profile Update" page online, the
link can be seen to the right of here at the top of the "Drivers" listing.
Drivers can send in up to date information on sponsor changes and the like as well as
adding their profile if they are new to the class. This information will be collected and
added to the site as soon as possible after being received.
2/09/10 - Gearing Up For 2010/11...... The
2010/11 season is coming up quickly with the first practice at Ruapuna scheduled for
October 2. Before that however the modifiedsprints still have to contest the Ellesmere
Championship on September 12 at the country track. With a bit of prized silverware up for
grabs and the first chance to get in some laps in for a while it's hoped that a decent
sized turn out will be on hand to contest the title. So who will take the glory this
season?
22/08/10 - Positive Talk From Ruapuna......
With the 2010/11 season not all that far away, the Christchruch Modifiedsprint Club
Committee decided it was time to discuss the coming season. Darren Nankivell and Craig
Broomhall were invited along as representatives of Ruapuna Speedway to answer any
questions and give some information for the coming season. Without going into details (as
they are not fully comfirmed) Ruapuna is looking to take on a different direction this
season, which sounds like a really positive step towards returning Ruapuna to becoming the
premier speedway attraction in the South. A number of enquiries were directed towards the
duo and were answered in positive light. The season's main event for the modifiedsprints -
The 3rd running of the Modifiedsprint Clay Cup was discussed and
has now been pencilled in for December 27th (pending finalisation from the C.S.A.) Mention
was also made about an upcoming working-bee at the Ruapuna track in preparation for the
coming season, the date for this is yet to be finalised and will be posted on here once
set.
The Christchurch Modifiedsprint Club would like to take the chance to thank Darren and Craig for taking time out to attend the meeting.
22/08/10 - Mystery Solved?...... Possibly!
Former modifiedsprint class rep Hayley Waterland contacted modifiedsprints.co.nz with this
email:
Hey Chris
If I was in NZ I could tell you for sure, but we are pretty sure Olly won the NZ Modified
Sprint champs in the first year of them officially being Modified Sprints 96/97 we think
it was run in Auckland.
Dick was not running the Modified Sprint at that stage, he only shared and then took over
the drive a year or two later.
In the first photo it looks like Battersby's car the 1NZ, if that is the case then it
confirms it was the Minisprint days. The second photo will be when they are Modified
Sprints
Hope this helps,
Hayley and Glenn
So, it seems that Olly did claim the title back in 1996/97. Thanks Hayley (and Glenn) for the information - we hope you arent missing the modifiedsprint class too much over there in the U.S. and that modifiedsprints.co.nz helps you keep up to date with the happenings in the class.
17/08/10 - National Title
Mystery!...... A recent posting on the Macgors Speedway forum has a few longtime followers of the
modifiedsprint class left scratching their heads. The post was initially asking about
former modified driver Olly Davies and his 66c modified. As a side note Olly's
modifiedsprint foray was mentioned and his results given. The mystery begins as evidence
points towards Davies once claiming the 1NZ crown, however official Speedway New Zealand
records fail to show that he did so.
Davies joined the modifiedsprint ranks and originally retained the 66c number on his car, however photographic and print evidence shows that he and his car were soon running under the 1NZ banner. So where did it go wrong?

Olly Davies 1NZ?....... not according to SNZ records.
SNZ records show that in the class's short national title tenure the five winners were as follows: 1997/98: Jason Way, 1998/99: Dick Webb, 1999/00: Reon Taylor, 2000/01: Reon Taylor, 2001/02: Natasha Rodgers.
Think you can shed some light on the situation? www.modifiedsprints.co.nz would be happy to know what happened.
10/08/10 - Brough (finally) Moves
On...... It's been a long process for Keith Brough, it was always his plan
to move into the sprintcar ranks for the 2010/11 Ruapuna season, but a number of issues
had halted Brough from making a definate decision. It seems now however that things are
falling into place, the number 26c modifiedsprint has changed hands allowing Keith to
concentrate on the sprintcar campaign. Brough is well aware that the transition will be a
challenge, but is hopeful his seasons in the modifiedsprint class will allow him to take
valuable experience into the V8 powered class. Brough joins the long list of
modifiedsprint competitors who have moved into the sprintcar ranks over the years and
joins Anthony Dawson as the second driver to move classes this season.
4/08/10 - Interest On High......
It's been some years since the modifiedsprints have seen such a strong interest in the
class. Theres plenty of talk about the pocket rocket class in the deep south according to
Darryl Harris, who was recently down that way to visit family. Reports are that there are
still a few drivers in the region who are keen to join the ranks of 'the fastest regional
class in New Zealand'. Closer to home and it's obvious that wider interest is there,
cars listed on modifiedsprints.co.nz are either being quickly snapped up, or the
owners are fielding a number of enquiries. As is always the case with speedway we
shouldn't "count chickens" and "tout numbers" as such stories tend to
evaporate into "I remember someone saying there would be xx cars this season - where
are they?" We can however say that things are looking positive for the coming season.
4/08/10 - Dont Forget Your Essential
Reading...... Just a reminder to grab some reading for these winter nights.
With the depths of winter now taking it's grasp on New Zealand, theres no better way to
pass the time than to sit down with a coffee and read through the latest edition of the
New Zealand Dirt Track Racing Magazine. The modifiedsprints are keeping things rolling by
having some articles published in the popular publication.

National Exposure - modifiedsprints have featured in recent editions of the NZDTR Magazine
If you are lucky you might be able to find a copy of the July mag on the shelves, in that edition we take a light-hearted approach to the arrival of Nathan Astle to the class with "It's Just Not Cricket" an article that tries to combine speedway with some of the terms used in cricket - does it work? Grab a copy of the July mag to find out!
Following that is obviously the August edition, which will either be instore or very close to it by now. In this months mag we look at the modifiedsprints introduction into the lower South Island - Modifiedsprints "wing it" South takes a look at the class in Invercargill, from it's humble beginnings to becoming one of the faster growing classes in the region. So grab a copy from your local distributor (cost is $5.90) make a coffee, sit back and relax.
29/07/10 - Bradshaw Steps Down......
Brian Bradshaw has decided to hang up his helmet from what can only be described as a
rough introduction to the modifiedsprint class. Many will remember the spectacular crash
that prematurely brought his season to an end. Speaking with Brian, it's obvious that
although he has a real passion for the class and feels he has unfinished business, he
realises that his body is telling him that it's time to retire. "Modifiedsprints are
a great class, I loved getting out there and going round, but I cant run the risk of more
injury" stated the veteran competitor who has a myriad of racing under his belt. As a
result Bradshaw reluctantly has the 84c machine listed on the classifieds page.
29/07/10 - Ruapuna Posts Draft
Calender...... Ruapuna Speedway has released a draft calender for the coming
season - check it out at their website www.ruapunaspeedway.co.nz
14/07/10 - Wanna Go Racing?......
Keith Brough has the 26c machine up for sale and has now notified modifiedsprints.co.nz
that the car will be available for lease for the coming season. Check out the classifieds
for details on this car.
14/07/10 - Another New Driver......
Another rookie will join the ranks for the 2010/11 season at Ruapuna. James Doyle has
recently purchased the 4c machine of Chris Parker and quickly set about taking it for a
few laps at Ellesmere Raceway over the past weekend, reports are that it was a promising
first outing with no issues to report. Doyle, no doubt will be taking advice from former
modifiedsprint hard-charger and friend Matt Honeywell as he prepares to take on the new
challenge.
14/07/10 - Another Ellesmere
Meeting...... Although the modifiedsprints essentially decided to have an
off-season after Westport, Ellesmere Raceway have kept the ball rolling for those drivers
who wish to keep racing over the winter months. Sunday, September 12 will see the running
of the 2010 Ellesmere Championship title for the class.
13/06/10 - Small But Successful......
A smaller than anticipated gathering was on hand for the Christchurch Modifiedsprint Clubs
second prize-giving event held at "The Loons" last night. There were
awards-a-plenty as the night was injected with a number of light-hearted awards looking
back at some of the seasons "moments" Awards such as the 'tow-rope' award (Shaun
Harris) and 'long way for nothing' award (Andre Goldsmith) sat comfortably between the
more serious and prestigeous awards.

Centre-piece for the night - Nathan Astles car sits a-top the stage
Kicking off the more serious side of the night was the presentation of "Feature Winners" sashes for the 2009/10 Ruapuna season. The father and son duo of Darryl and Kieran Harris dominated the season this year, picking up seven of the ten sashes between them, while Tom lumsden claimed two and Keith Brough the other victory.
A technical hitch meant that the trophies couldnt be awarded on the day for the 3rd Annual Modifiedsprint Invasion to Westport, so presentation of these was added to the ceremonies. Alastair Ford, and Andre Goldsmith were presented with their participation medallions, while Nathan Astle (3rd) Dave Kerr (2nd) and Tom Lumsden (1st) were presented with their respective trophies. This was especially significant - given the fact that the event sposors Kevin and Jill Arnesen had made the trip over from Reefton to attend the evenings proceedings.
With a few more light-hearted awards thrown in, attention soon shifted back to an award that is given for services to the Club and Class. The Presidents Cup is awarded to someone who has done a fair share to further the modifiedsprint class over the season. This year the award was presented to Darryl Harris for his on-going work in getting the class established in the Invercargill region as well as being the driving force behind organising the away meeting at Cromwell.
Next was the newest addition to the awards - The Christchurch Modifiedsprint Club - Club Championship. An initiation that saw the results from the first nights race award points to drivers over various meetings throughout the season. Darryl Harris continued to add to his silverware by claiming third spot behind the always smiling Craig "Johnzey" Johns, and claiming the overall spoils for the first time and adding to his collection of feature winners sashes was Kieran Harris.

Season Spoils - Kieran Harris (centre) holds the Championship trophy after taking out the Christchurch Modifiedsprint Club Championship Title. Craig Johns (Left) claimed 2nd and Darryl Harris (right) rounded out the podium in 3rd.
The ceremonies concluded with a series of Thank-you's, Class Scrutineer - Graeme Price was recognised and presented with a race-shirt for the coming season. Due to family reasons, Class Rep - Ben Crowe was unable to attend the awards. Chris Mackenzie accepted the race-shirt on his behalf and sent his and the clubs extended support/thanks out to Ben and his family. Finally thanks went out to Hang-Up Entertainment for their support of the website, Supreme Take-aways for their support of the roll-over fund, The Loons and their helpful staff. Suez Harris for supplying the spot prizes, and Jan and Tracy for their work on the supper.
With the awards out of the way, supper was served and the socialising side of the night began.
13/06/10 - Bradshaw Claims
Prestigious Award...... Although unable to be present at last nights
ceremonies Brain Bradshaw was recognised when he picked up the prestigious "Golden
Wall-nut" award. Bradshaws exploits in being enough of a "nut" to drive up
the wall earlier this season meant no-one came close for nomination. As explained on the
night Brian was fortunate enough to pull off his heriocs on a night when two Russian
Cosmonauts were in the Ruapuna crowd. His attempt to launch into the stratosphere were
equally rewarded when he was signed to join the Russion Space program - Bradshaw is
currently in Russia training for the next mission.
10/06/10 - Get Your Tickets At The
Door...... Door sales will be available at the door for the Christchurch
Modifiedsprint Club's prize-giving social to be held at "The Loons"
Entertainment Club on Saturday June 12. Doors are set to open at 7.30pm - get along for a
great night out. Costs are $20 per head including supper, entertainment and spot prizes.
10/06/10 - Last Minute Change......
Ellesmere Raceway has put out a late change to it's race calendar, this Sunday's club day
has now been upgraded to a race meeting. At time of posting this item
modifiedsprints.co.nz isnt sure how many modifiedsprints will be present, although there
has been a murmering of a possible modifiedsprint "Ladies race"
taking place.
10/06/10
- Southland Report...... Things are on the up in Southland!
Shaun Harris reports that there are now five cars in the deep south. Along with himself
and Danny Lang, the class has been joined by former midget and sprintcar pilot Bradley May
- who has had a less than good start after taking the car out for some practice laps, only
to do some major engine damage. making the cross-over from stockcars is the duo of Craig
Phillips and Lee O'Keefe. Harris see's the modifiedsprints rise in the south as a positive
move not only fro the class, but also for speedway in general in the lower South
Island.
8/06/10 - Lumsden Makes It Two In A
Row...... Tom Lumsden rocketed his way around the Sunset Speedway bullring
on Sunday afternoon to claim his second "Arnesen Transport" Modifiedsprint
Invasion title. It wasnt an easy task either as he was constantly being hunted down by
current South Island midgetcar champion David Kerr. Adding to that was the challenge of a
rain-soaked track to contend with. However Lumsden slowly began to gain a leading margin
as the race progressed and in the end a challenge wasnt forthcoming. Likewise a similar
battle for the final podium spot was well worth watching as a charging Nathan Astle hunted
down a consistant and awkward to pass Andre Goldsmith and eventually made a spectacular
lunge down the inside to claim the third place. Alastair Ford rounded out the competitive
but smaller than expected field claiming the fifth spot overall.
Arnesen Transport Modifiedsprint Invasion - Arnesen Trophy:
1st: Tom Lumsden (42c) 2nd: David Kerr (7c) 3rd: Nathan Astle (9c)

Winner of the Arnesen Trophy - 42c Tom Lumsden at speed
Saturday was a similar result albeit a much drier affair. Lumsden and Kerr once again battled the day away with Lumsden claiming two wins and Kerr the other. Astle however would serve as a spoiler for Lumsden who could have claimed the "Best In The West" title by a single point if he could have found a way past the ever improving 9c machine. It wasnt to be, and a third spot in the second race would have Lumsden and Kerr tied on points after the three rounds. A run off was called for to decide the title - but with both drivers double-stinting time was an issue as the Lumsden modifiedsprint was continually converted throughout the day to boost midget numbers. In the end a far simpler approach was taken, and a simple flip of a coin a result was reached - Lumsden claimed the "Best In The West" title, Kerr was second and Astle continued his run of third placings at race events. Goldsmith came home in forth after a DNF/Black-flag situation ended the hopes of Alastair Ford in the final heat.

27/05/10 - Class Continues To Grow
Down South...... Interest in the modifiedsprint class continues to grow as
yet another car makes it's way down to Invercargill. The ex-Rob Campbell machine has found
a new home in the southern city boosting numbers to four in the region.
17/05/10 - Eye On The Prize -
Giving...... Hot on the heels of the trip to Westport, the Christchuch
Modifiedsprint Club will be hosting it's second prize-giving and social on Saturday June
12. Last years event was hailed as a huge success by many of those who attended the
function. Being held once again at the "homely" surroundings of "The
Loons" in Lyttelton, it's sure to be a night worth attending. Tickets will be
available soon, and come at a cost of $20each, which includes entry to the venue, supplied
supper and a chance to win some spot prizes throughout the night.
17/05/10 - Head'n West......
For the third year in a row the modifiedsprints will be making the trek over to Westport
to contest the "3rd Annual Modifiedsprint Invasion" proudly supported by Arnesen
Transport of Reefton on the weekend of 5-6 June 2010. Jill and Kevin Arnesen of Arnesen
Transport have been supporters of this event since its first running back in 2008, and
even though numbers of cars might not have been what was first expected they have stood by
the class over the last three years - something that is highly appreciated by the
Christchurch Modifiedsprint Club. The club is hopeful that once the event gets itself
established and gains more prestige within the class, that it will entice greater numbers
to make the haul to Westport. At the time of this update it's hopeful that a field of six
cars will be contesting the 2010 event.

Back for the third time - The modifiedsprints will venture to the rugged West Coast.
13/05/10 - "Double" Double
Take At Ellesmere...... Rookie driver Tim George joined the fray of being
one of a number of competitors to "double-stint" at Ellesmere Raceway last
Sunday. The Amberly based driver took to the track in the 25c modifiedsprint and stormed
away from the pack to claim victory in the first race of the day.George then proceeded to
follow that up with another win in the modifiedsprints before taking to the track on his
ATV. A win was soon forthcoming and a successful day topped off by claiming the checkered
flag in the final heat of the ATV points chase. George has a strong past in the ATV class
and is a highly respected competitor on the scene.

Tim George - powering his way to one of two race victories.
Goerge's good run has surely boosted his points tally in the four round Ellesmere Winter Series - unfortunately modifiedsprints.co.nz has not yet recieved the updated points standings at time of this update.
1/05/10 - Important Notice To
Competitors!..... Ruapuna Speedway has announced that it's AGM will be held
on TUESDAY MAY 4, 2010 at the Ruapuna Speedway Club Rooms, Hasketts Rd,
Templeton starting at 7.30pm.
1/05/10 - Looking To Close The
Gap...... Darryl Harris will be looking to continue the form that saw him
take the 31c Henchcraft to victory in the CTRA South Island Championship last Sunday.
Harris sits a mere 4 points adrift of series leader Dave Kerr after the first round of the
four round series.

The Kaiapoi based driver looked to struggle with the lumpy and challenging track early in the day, but came to grips with the track by the end of the meeting - the result was a good run of consistant placings and second spot overall. Round Two is scheduled to be held at Ellesmere Raceway on Sunday May 9.

1/05/10 - On The Mend......
Many will remember this spectacular exit by Brian Bradshaw earlier this season,
Modifiedsprints.co.nz recently had the chance to catch up with the passionate racer to see
how he was recovering from the injuries sustained. The good news is that Brian has made a
full recovery, however he does still have a few niggling pains from time to time, this
hasnt stopped him as he recently took his S.T.A.R. Car out to the Ruapuna circuit and
proceeded to post his fastest ever time around the sealed track. Although the car is
currently hanging from the rafters as he re-locates into a new business premises, he is
already talking positively about getting back on track next season. Bradshaw has invested
a substantial sum in up-dating the safety of the car as he believes that the current seat
rulings are somewhat lack-lustre for a class that travels so quickly. Theres still some
work to be done on the car before it will hit the track again, but Brian's passion for the
class will surely spur him on to get that completed in time for the practices at Ruapuna.

Bradshaw certainly counts himself lucky, and realises that his injuries could have been a lot worse if it wasnt for the prompt medical care supplied by the St John service on hand. "These people are there at all meetings and are generally over-looked as far as their input to a meeting goes. They were great to me in the way they looked after me, and I would like to thank them for that, The whole bunch were just great" stated Bradshaw. Brian would like to especially thank Shirley Tavendale, for her great care in the St John rooms, and also send a thanks out to Matt Crowe for his support after the incident (especially for the free coffee) and for making sure Brians car was delivered back to his property after the incident..
1/05/10 - Ellesmere Update!......
Wayne Lumsden has passed on an update from last weekends Ellesmere race meeting. It wasnt
a great day for the two car team, Tom Lumsden's (42c) chassis took a fair knock at the
meeting - so much so that it snapped the torsion rack in the Clarke-built chassis, News on
this is that the car is on it's way to Auckland to recieve the required repairs and will
hopefully be back in time for the next round on May 9. The other car, in the hands of Dave
Kerr also finished the meeting prematurely but not as was previously reported - Kerr was
attempting a different line in the hopes of catching the flying Darryl Harris, however all
he managed to do was pick up a huge lump of mud which dislodged the fuel pump wiring
connector. Wayne has already admitted to "being stressed by the end of the week"
but is confident"ISH" of being able to do so in time.
28/04/10 - Kerr Tops, Harris Wins,
Astle Impresses...... Wildcard and guest driver in the Ellesmere Winter
Series - Dave Kerr drove as only he can to take out the top spot in the series by the
slightest of margins. The South Island midget star threw the second Lumsden owned machine
around the lumpy Ellesmere track to claim two victories, and a hard fought second spot.
His fortunes however would take a bad turn in the winner takes all CTRA South Island Championship race at the conclusion of the meeting, chasing Darryl Harris hard for the win, Kerr tripped over a rut and did enough damage in the rear of the car to force him to retire from the event. Harris had up till this point shown a clean set of heels as he slowly opened up a lead until a caution was called for the spun up car of rookie driver Alister Ford. It was at the restart that Kerr's run ended and from there Harris was able to run home to take the South Island title. Behind him the remaining field batlled out the minor spots, with Andre Goldsmith only just holding out the fast improving rookie drive of Nathan Astle. Astle's pace slowly progressed throughout the day as he became more accustomed to the recently purchased modifiedsprint, his ability in close quarters racing impressed many including class rep Ben Crowe. "He's shown he can pass cars without any issues or contact - that's great for a first time out, especially on what can only be described as a challenging track" stated Crowe. Astle had two bites at further progressing his position as he raced alongside Goldsmith on the last two laps and was unfortunate not to claim the second spot.
CTRA South Island Championship results:
1st: Darryl Harris (31c) 2nd: Andre Goldsmith (41c) 3rd: Nathan Astle (9c)
Further details on this meeting will be posted as sonn as modifiedsprints.co.nz recieves the points totals for the Ellesmere Winter Series. The Christchurch Modifiedsprint Club, and it's competitors would like to forward their many thanks to Carrodus Bros Truck Spares - Leeston, and Equus Southern - Southbridge, your support for this series is much appreciated.
28/04/10 - Looking To Next
Season!...... Continuing the trend of past seasons, the Modifiedsprints are
once again responsible for bolstering the ranks at Ruapuna Speedway. For the 2010/11
season, Anthony Dawson will move on from his brief stint in the class to step up into the
sprintcar ranks. Dawson recently took out the "Modifiedsprint - Rookie Of The
Year" award at the Ruapuna Speedway prize-giving, and had always shown an interest in
the V8 powered class. His car has recently been sold on to new driver Alister Ford. Also
showing interest in a possible move is driver of the 26c machine, Keith Brough. Brough has
had a mixed bag of results since stepping into the modifiedsprint class and building up a
new Raceworks chassis. At this stage Broughs path is uncertain dependant on the sale of
his current car and of course the all might dollar. Modifiedsprints.co.nz wishes these two
drivers all the best whatever the outcome should be.
25/04/10 - Ready To Race!......
The Weather in Canterbury over the last 24 hours would have put most in doubt over the
ANZAC meeting to be run at Ellesmere Raceway. News through as of 9.00am is that the
weather is fine, the track looks good and the day will be ready to roar into action!
By now most would have heard or read about former Black Cap Cricketer, Nathan Astle joining the modifiedsprint ranks after recently purchasing the 17c machine off Craig Johns. Astle's first competitive outing will be this afternoon as he has entered the Ellesmere Winter Series. Although Nathan is reserved about setting the world alight so early, he is keen to use the Ellesmere Series as a vital training ground before the next season at Ruapuna Speedway begins. All here at modifiedsprints.co.nz will be keeping a keen eye on Astle to see how the transition from cricket oval to dirt oval goes.
What a great way to finish off a Sunday afternoon, than to relax and watch some speedway action - the mud is set to flay at Ellesmere at 1.00pm.
15/04/10 - It's All Go!......
The Ellesmere Winter Series, organised by Wayne Lumsden is set to roar into action at the
popular ANZAC meeting at Ellesmere Raceway on April 25. After the recent drivers meeting
numbers were strong enough for the series to get the go-ahead. This meeting will be a
double header as the final race of the day will also decide the CTRA Soulth Island
Championship. Drivers are still welcomed to join this series, but are asked to do so as
soon as possible to allow time for details to be added to the race programme etc. Entry
forms are available here: Winter
Series Entry Form.

12/04/10 - REMINDER - Important Drivers Meeting...... A drivers meeting has been called for Tuesday April
13 starting at 7.30pm to discuss various issues. Items on the agenda are the discussion of
the Ruapuna Prize-giving (voting for best presented and Rookie Of The Year Awards) the
forth-coming Ellesmere Winter Series and a number of other modifiedsprint related items.
The meeting is to be held in the Heathcote Room at the Cashmere Club. Drivers who are
currently in possession of trophies are asked to return them at this meeting if possible.
12/04/10 - Winter Series
Proposed...... Wayne Lumsden has been working hard to get a proposed Winter
Series up and running at Ellesmere Raceway for 2010. Those drivers who made the trek down
to Cromwell would have received an entry form, outlining the rules and format. The series
is scheduled to be run over four rounds of the current 2010 Ellesmere Raceway calendar.
Drivers wishing to enter should forward their entry forms into the Christchurch
Modifiedsprint Club as soon as possible so that the viability of running this series can
be assessed.
For those drivers who weren't at Cromwell (or those who lost their entry forms) an online version can be downloaded from here: Winter Series Entry Form.
10/04/10 - Cromwell Feature
Video...... Coverage of the modifiedsprints Feature event at Cromwell has
now been added to the site...
8/04/10 - Cracker Weekend In Central
Otago...... It truely was a noisey weekend around Otago over the long Easter
weekend. Friday night most in the area would have been subject to the constant popping
echoing from the hill-sides as the annual Easter-Bunny Hunt took place. Saturday became
somewhat sub-dued as over the course of the day a southerly front brought rain which put
halt to any racing at Central Motor Speedway, however over the hill at Wanaka I'm sure
there was plenty of roaring of plane engines and explosive pyrotechnics to be heard at the
famous Warbirds Over Wanaka airshow. With the bad weather putting pay to the saturday
night meeting, things were thrown into an air of un-certainty as far as the
modifiedsprints first appearance at Cromwell would go......read more here
29/03/10 - Heading South Again......
The modifiedprints once again head south - this time its to Cromwell's Central Motor
Speedway for their two day Easter speedway extravaganza. As this article goes to press, a
fairly strong contingient of cars are looking likely to attend for two days of hard and
fast racing on a track that will be new to most of the drivers. Modifiedsprints.co.nz cant
be 100% sure but this could well be the first time the winged pocket rockets have visited
the Central Otago track. Further details on Central Motor Speedway can be found on their
website Central Motor Speedway. If you are intending to head down to Cromwell for the weekends racing, I
suggest you drop by the website and print out the online discount voucher - a great
initiative by the Cromwell Club!
29/03/10 - Another One Heads
South...... Interest in New Zealands fastest regional class continues to
grow as yet another modifiedsprint finds itself winging it's way down to Invercargil. The
Ex Mark Jamieson/RBR machine has recently been snapped up by a current competitor from
Riverside Speedway. That now takes the modifiedsprint numbers to three in the worlds
southern most speedway and rumours are that theres plenty more interest in the class in
the deep south as well.
26/03/10 - Wet Weekend Down
South...... One of the uncertain things about travelling is the in-ability
to control the weather, and thats exactly what the small contingient of modifiedsprints
had to contend with last weekend when they headed south to Invercargill's Riverside
Speedway to race. Saturday brought rain - and with it the iminent postponement of the
nights racing until Sunday afternoon. Even then things looked doubtful as the track
remained heavy and looked more suited to mud-plugging that speedway racing - however
perseverance from the Riverside club and competitors saw the track come back to something
worth racing on.

Shaun Harris takes a differernt look at the boggy track. (photo's supplied by Don Mackenzie)
Unfortunately the turn out of modifiedsprints was less than first anticipated, with a few drivers pulling out at the last minute and rookie driver Anthony Dawson striking road-car mechanical issues on the way. This left only Darryl Harris and the ever-present Tom Lumsden to front along with the local pairing of Shaun Harris and Danny Lang. With the track condiditions being less than desirable it was decided to start the races in indian file and the format would be reduced to two heats due to time constraints....this however would seem mildy pointless as both Lumsden and Darryl Harris took a win a piece, requiring a run-off for the Southland Champs Title. Harris would be the victor in this run-off and would claim the title ahead of Lumsden and Shaun Harris.

Run to the flag - Darryl Harris heads home Tom Lumsden and Shaun Harris
15/03/10 - Two In A Row For
Lumsden...... Tom Lumsden drove a faultless Feature event on a perfect track
on Saturday night to claim the Top End Motors sponsored Modifiedsprint Clay Cup
for the second year running. Lumsden placed consistantly in the three point scoring heats,
posting a 2nd, 3rd and 1st to claim 30 points and pole position for the 15 lap feature,
before going on to win with a green to checkered flag race. Darryl Harris worked his way
through the field to finish in a well deserved 2nd spot ahead of a highly charged Brett
Robinson. Full results are on the results page

Tom Lumsden won the Modifiedsprint Clay Cup for the second time.

11/03/10 - Final Run At Ruapuna For
2009/10 Season...... Saturday night, the pace is sure to be hot as the
modifiedsprint contest the second running of the Modifiedsprint Clay Cup, this season
brought to you by Top End Motors. At time of this update around 10 cars were confirmed to
take the green flag. This seasons event is an open affair with many drivers putting on
blinding displays of speed to win various race throughout the season.
Odds on favourites would have to be the father and son pairing of Darryl and Kieran Harris, although Tom Lumsden has had the 42c machine flying in recent outings. Brett Robinson returns from a short illness and along with his team-mate Craig Johns cant be ruled out of being in contention. We havent seen a great deal of Keith Brough this season due to other commitments, however if he can show the form that took him to a convincing victory at Westport last season, who know where he could end up. Andre Goldsmith unfortunately cant take to the track tonight due to work commitments, however he has kindly loaned the car to the hard charging Jason Stark.
Lets not forget the rookies, Anthony Dawson has impressed many with his out of the box speed and style, while Tim George will surely be hoping to bring the car home in one piece in only his second meeting.
This should be a good one, so get trackside to see New Zealand's Fastest Regional Class race for glory!
2010 Top End Motors Modifiedsprint Clay Cup - Saturday March 13, Ruapuna Speedway, also featuring Sprintcar War Of The Wings, and the Metalcraft Roofing Fireworks display. Gates open at 5.00pm the racing kicks off at 7.00pm. Cancellations: 349 7727.
10/03/10 - Just When You
Thought...... the 2009/10 season was coming to a close the modifiedsprint
season has just been extended after fielding a few requests for the up-coming months.
First up is the final meeting at Ruapuna Speedway on March 13 which will be the second
running of the Modifiedsprint Clay Cup. The following weekend will see the class head
South to Riverside Speedway in Invercargill. Next is the two-day meeting at Central Motor
Speedway - Cromwell held over the Easter break, and finishing off the tour the class will
return to Sunset Speedway in Westport for the 3rd Annual Modifiedsprint Invasion.
10/03/10 - Deep South Title!......
As mentioned in the previous post, the modifiedsprints will be taking in a meeting at
Invercargill's Riverside Speedway on Saturday March 20. News through from a recent
committee meeting is that this meeting will now host the Southland Modifiedsprint
Championship. Shaun Harris has informed modifiedsprints.co.nz that racing starts at
4pm and any enquiries from drivers should be forwarded to him on (03) 931 0422, or Darryl
Harris on (03) 327 4292. Other details about Riverside Speedway can be found on their
website: www.riversidespeedway.co.nz
10/03/10 - Series Proposal......
Wayne Lumsden recently attended a modifiedsprint drivers meeting to outline a proposed
series to be held at Ellesmere raceway after the Ruapuna season has finished. Lumsden was
canvasing peoples thoughts on a series, and out-lined his thoughts as far as what was
required to set it up. Lumsden continued on to say that he already had a few sponsors
behind the series, and a possible cash pool would be on offer for those entering. Further
discussion is required before this series is finallised but the general feeling of the
meeting seemed positive. Wayne would be interested to recieve comments from interested
drivers.
4/03/10 - Hotshots Gear Up......
The battles of old resumed at the last outing at Ruapuna speedway as drivers start gearing
up for the Modifiedsprint Clay Cup featuring at the 2010 season finale on March 13.
Although numbers have been less than expected for the 09/10 season spectators have been
treated to some of the fastest and most hassle-free racing over the course of the season.
Last Saturday's outing was no different with all races going from green to checkered
without any stoppages. Darryl Harris notched up another feature win after breaking away
from the pack, while Tom Lumsden battled hard with Kieran Harris for a bulk of the race to
eventually take out the second spot. Earlier in the night Craig Johns returned to his past
form and claimed the victory in heat two, while Kieran Harris took out the opening event
for the night.
Results -
Heat 1. 1st: Kieran Harris (22c), 2nd: Tom Lumsden (42c), 3rd: Anthony Dawson. (8c)
Heat 2. 1st: Craig Johns (17c), 2nd: Tom Lumsden (42c), 3rd: Kieran Harris (22c).

21/02/10 - Southern Report......
Shaun Harris reports that the Invercargill based modifiedsprints put on a demonstration
run at Riverside Raceway during their recent race meeting. Harris and Danny Lang took to
the track and reported that the track was a little "lumpy" but the feedback has
been good with a lot of interest being shown in the cars. Harris is keen to get the
modifiedsprint class up and running in the deep South.
Something New For Southland - Shaun Harris is looking to get the class started down South
14/02/10 - Harris Finally Shakes The
Hoodoo...... After a few seasons of trying, coming close and failing, Kieran
Harris finally took the 22c car to the top spot of the Canterbury Championship last night
at Ruapuna Speedway. Harris set a blistering pace over the course of the night to easily
win both qualifying heats, before storming home to victory in the feature, ahead of Darryl
Harris (31c) and Brett Robinson (52c).
Heat 1. 1st: Kieran Harris, 2nd: Keith Brough, 3rd: Darryl Harris.
Heat 2. 1st: Kieran Harris, 2nd: Craig Johns, 3rd: Andre Goldsmith.
Feature. 1st: Kieran Harris, 2nd: Darryl Harris, 3rd: Brett Robinson.
14/02/10 - Spruce Up......
Something that has been put off for way too long now is an update of the Class Info
page......well, finally it's happened!
12/02/10 - New Website Sponsor......
It's welcome aboard to Hang-Up Entertainment Services Ltd, who have generously taken up
the sponsorship of modifiedsprints.co.nz. Hang-Up specialise in providing staging and
lighting to many of the concerts and displays that visit New Zealand, and can cater for
any situation from mall displays and school productions right through to major outdoor
concerts! Their support ensures that the website can continue on for the future. We
should also take the time to thank our other supporters: The Cashmere Club, who generously
offer up a room for the club to hold it's meetings in, and Supreme Takeaways - who along
with making some of the tastiest burgers in Christchurch, are supporting the roll-over
fund for this season. The Modifiedsprint Club encourages you to use these supporters
services where possible.
12/02/10 - It's All On......
this Saturday night (13 February) at Ruapuna's "Night Of Champions" when all the
car classes contest their Canterbury Championships for 2010. The Modifiedsprints will be
fighting it out to claim the title and gain bragging rights as the build up to the Clay
Cup begins....So who will it be??? get to Ruapuna on Saturday and find out. Further
details can be found at www.ruapunaspeedway.co.nz
12/02/10 - Bradshaw Bouncing
Back...... Rookie modifiedsprint driver Brian Bradshaw (84c) is set to
rebuild the car and get back on the track again after his violent roll-over earlier in the
season. His return could be some time away yet, as both the driver and car require some
repairs before seeing the dirt again.
12/02/10 - Another One Wings It
South...... It has been reported that another modifiedsprint has headed
south to the Invercargill region. The 38c machine of Paul Strudwicke has been snapped up
by a yet to be named southlander, meaning that there are now 2 cars outside the Canterbury
region...Negotiations for the class to run at Invercargill's Riverside Raceway are still
underway, keep an eye out right here for the latest updates on this....... can the class
still be called regional?
12/02/10 - A Longtime Coming......
Andre Goldsmith reports that last seasons Modifiedsprint Club initiative to present
"feature winners" with a trophy or sash has finally fallen into place. This
season a few hold-ups prevented the sashes from being presented at the earlier meetings,
however Andre now has the sashes and will look to distribute them to the relevent winners
at this Saturday nights meeting. The Modifiedsprint class is the only class that races out
of Ruapuna that rewards it's winners in such a way.
29/01/10 - Another Double
Header...... The modifiedsprint scream back into action on Friday and
Saturday night as Ruapuna's season kicks into high gear. The class will be on the cards as
support for the "Salute to Goodie" and "Sprintcar Gold Cup" events.
29/01/10 - It's All Over Rover!......
The Supreme Takeaways roll-over fund was snapped up last Friday night when rookie driver
Brian Bradshaw took a nasty tumble across the start finish line at Ruapuna Speedway.

Photo's never do justice to a crash - and reports say that the incident was a hard and spectacular roll-over. Both the car and driver suffered damage with Bradshaw admitted to hospital with a broken pelvis, and the 84c machine sustaining moderate damage.

Rough Landing - Brian Bradshaw's spectaucular exit. (Photo's supplied by Kevin and Michelle)
Everyone here at Modifiedsprints.co.nz, along with fellow modifiedsprint competitors wishes Brian a speedy recovery after this incident and hope to see him trackside again soon. With the Supreme Takeaways Roll-over fund collected the prize pool resets to begin growing again.
29/01/10 - Recent Results......
Results from the Finals night of the New Zealand T.Q. Championship would easily be
over-shadowed by the success of Christchurch based drivers in the championship fight. Glen
Durie (66c) drove an exceptional and well time run to work his way through to become the
2009/10 New Zealand T.Q. Champion. Another Christchurch driver, and brief modifiedsprint
pilot Ricky Brett (9c) Congratulations to both of these drivers. Current Modifiedsprint
driver Tom Lumsden (42c) was also contesting the event and from all reports was well on
the pace, however mechanical gremlins crept in and stopped Lumsden from making the finals.
Back to the winged brigade and their results:-
Heat 1. Kieran Harris 1, Andre Goldsmith 2, Brett Robinson 3.
Heat 2. Darryl Harris 1, Robinson 2, K Harris 3.
Feature. D Harris 1, K Harris 2, Robinson 3.
29/01/10 - And There Was Four!......
A very dissappointing turn out of four members turned up for a recent Christchurch
Modifiedsprint Club meeting, and of those only one could be classed as a full-time driver.
Andre Goldsmith was joined by class rep: Ben Crowe, Club Treasurer: William Gardiner and
stand-in driver Jason Stark for what would be one of the shortest meetings held.
18/01/10 - And The Winner Is......
The weather! Rain caused the postponement of Saturday nights meeting until Sunday
afternoon - however with continual overnight rain the Ruapuna track was unworkable for the
rescheduled meeting and the meeting was again postponed. The finals for the New Zealand
T.Q. midget title will now take place on Thursday night (21 January) starting at 7.00pm.
The modifiedsprints will be back on track and gunning to contest Round 3 of the
Christchurch Modifiedsprint Club Championship. It was mixed fortunes for past and current
modifiedsprint drivers contesting the T.Q title as Rachel Melrose successfully qualified
for the finals, while current modifiedsprint hotshoe Tom Lumsden missed the cut and must
now qualify via the repercharge on Thursday night - fingers crossed he can make the cut.
18/01/10
- And They Went Racing...... Reports from Friday nights racing
at Ruapuna were of a good turn out with ten cars fronting as a support class for the New
Zealand T.Q. Qualifying night. Results for the three races were as follows:
Heat One: 1st:Kieran Harris, 2nd: Keith Brough, 3rd: Darryl Harris
Heat Two: 1st: Craig Johns, 2nd: Darryl Harris, 3rd: Kieran Harris.
Feature: 1st: Kieran Harris, 2nd: Brett Robinson, 3rd: Craig Johns
12/01/10 - First Run Of The Year?...
This weekend will see the modifiedsprints return to the track for their first run of 2010.
Xpress Printing House Ruapuna Speedway plays host to the 2009/2010 New Zealand T.Q. Midget
Championship on Friday and Saturday night. Followers of the Modifiedsprint class will have
their sights firmly set on former/current modifiedsprint racers Rachel Melrose and Tom
Lumsden as they compete in the cut and thrust T.Q title hoping to get their name etched
into New Zealand speedway history. All here at Modifiedsprints.co.nz wish them well for
the title chase. Closer to home the modifiedsprints will be playing a supporting class
role and will be contesting another round of its inaugeral Christchurch Modifiedsprint
Club Championship.
12/01/10 - Modifiedsprints Spreading
Their Wings?... It's been a couple of seasons since a modifiedsprint was in
the hands of someone from outside of the Canterbury region. That was the short lived stint
in the class by Nelson's Paul Russ, before he jumped into the T.Q. Midget class. Now it
seems that once again the class will have a car in the hands of someone from outside of
the region - this time its the deep South!
Former Invercargill stockcar and production saloon driver Shaun Harris has recently taken ownership of the ex- Mike O'Donoghue machine and will look to add a southern injection into the class. Harris joins the Christchurch family stable of Darryl (his father) and Keiran to give the Harris Racing Team a three-pronged attack in the modifiedsprint class. Reports are that the car will primarily be based in Christchurch with Shaun making the trip North when-ever possible, appearances of the modifiedsprint class in Harris' hometown of Invercargill havent been ruled out yet either with a much talked about "demonstration" run at Riverside Speedway a possibility.
Harris has enjoyed numorous successes in the other classes he has campaigned in, and once he gets comfortable with the speed and agility of the modifiedsprints he should be one to watch.
11/12/09 - Back To The Track!...
The Modifiedsprints return to Ruapuna on Saturday night (December 12) to be part of the
ever popular Santa's Speedway Spectacular. Feature for the night for the modifiedsprints
will be the running of Round 2 of the Christchurch Modifiedsprint Club Championship, who
will claim the glory in this round? A good quality field of sprintcars are expected for
the nights racing, with a few visiting North Island drivers making the trek down to take
on the locals, along with prizes and goody bags for the kids, Kick off your xmas "speedway
style" - at Xpress Printing House Ruapuna Speedway! Racing gets
underway at 7.00pm, for further details visit: www.ruapunaspeedway.co.nz
22/11/09 - 3 Fronts - 2 Fronts - 1
Cold Front!... The Modifiedsprints kicked back into action again at Xpress
Printing House Ruapuna Speedway, on a night that would deliver mixed results across the
field. Brough who is running strongly after a torrid first season in the new Raceworks
chassis made a good break from the pack at the green and led all the way without any major
challenge. Read more.....

Feature Winner - Keith Brough led the field home.
22/11/09 - Roll-Over Fund Update!...

The Supreme Takeaways Roll-over Fund continues to grow as the second meeting of the season went by without producing any battered wings. The meeting however wasnt short of incident - Anthony Dawson features in this episode of "Modifiedsprint Moments"
22/11/09 - Christchurch
Modifiedsprint Club Championship... Round 1 of this new club initiative got
underway on Saturday, with points being scored off the first race on the cards for the
night. At the end of the round the points table stands as follows:
| 1st | 42c - Tom Lumsden | 20 |
| 2nd | 31c - Darry Harris | 19 |
| 3rd | 8c - Anthony Dawson |
18 |
| 4th | 52c - Brett Robinson | 17 |
| 5th | 22c - Kieran Harris | 16 |
| 6th | 17c - Craig Johns | 15 |
| 7th | 41c - Andre Goldsmith | 14 |
| 8th | 26c - Keith Brough | 13 |
17/11/09 - Double-Header This
Weekend!... Xpress Printing House Ruapuna Speedway is the place to be this
weekend (November 20/21) for a double-header of high speed action. Friday Night will see
something a little different at Ruapuna as the DHL Saloon series rolls into Christchurch
to take in a round of the South Island series. The Modifiedsprints will be standing down
for the Friday night meeting, but will be back and raring to go on Saturday night when
Ruapuna's regular open-wheel calendar resumes.
17/11/09 - False Start Ready For
Re-start... As previously posted the proposed opening round of the Christchurch
Modifiedsprint Club Championship was postponed at the last minute on opening night at
Ruapuna. Thats all set to change however as the season-long title chase is set to get
underway on Saturday night with the runnning of Round One.....who will draw first blood in
this series? Be there to find out!
12/11/09 - Lumsden Takes Feature To
Get Season Underway!... Tom Lumsden (42c) started the new season as if he
hadnt ever been out of the seat as he stormed away from the rest of the field to claim the
spoils on opening night at Xpress Printing House Ruapuna Speedway. The
modifiedsprints returned to the track with a somewhat smaller than anticipated field -
however that small field was one of quality with many of the classes hot-shoes fronting
for the season opener. Read
more.....

Tom Lumsden led all the way to claim the first feature of 2009/10.
12/11/09 - On A Roll? - Lets Hope
Not!... It's welcome aboard to Supreme Takeaways, who have gotten behind the
modifiedsprint class by sponsoring the "Roll-Over Fund" for the 2009/10 season.
Supreme Takeaways are at the forefront of Christchurch takeaways when it comes to Gluten
Free products, and of course they do a fabulous job of creating a range of normal
high-quality takeaway favourites as well! The webmaster here at modifiedsprints.co.nz is
quite partial to their "REAL" meat patties and reckons their burgers are the
best in the city! Supreme Takeaways can be found at 83 Stanmore Road, Linwood and can be
phoned on 389-8725. Be sure to tell them that modifiedsprints.co.nz sent you....

The Supreme Takeaways Roll-Over Fund is up for grabs at any Ruapuna meeting where the class will be running and if not claimed, it jackpots for the next meeting until claimed. Opening night at Ruapuna was the first night for the Supreme Takeways Roll-Over Fund and it was very nearly claimed in the first outing of the season for the modifiedsprints when hard-charging Keith Brough came slightly unstuck....
Unfortunately for Brough the slow "tip-over" was deemed not to constitute as a "Roll-over" and the cash stayed in the pool for the next meeting. Be sure to check out the roll-over fund update right here after every meeting at Ruapuna....
12/11/09 - Christchurch
Modifiedsprint Club Championship Halted!... Saturday 7th of November was set
to be the opening round of the new Christchurch Modifiedsprint Club Championship. All the
details were in place (including in the Ruapuna programme) however late notice of the
opening night becoming a "Trophy Night" meant that the round had to be
postponed, in keeping with the clubs position of not holding a round over the top of any
C.S.A. sanctioned event. Round One is now set down to be run on Saturday November 21.
5/11/09 - The Dirt's About To Fly...
The 2009/10 season kicks into action this Saturday night (November 7) at Xpress Printing
House Ruapuna Speedway. At time of this update its looking like a moderate turn out of
modifiedsprints will hit the track for the opening night of openwheel action at the
Templeton based track. Looking back at the final practice begins to excite the senses of a
closely fought season ahead, with numourous drivers throughout the field looking to have
upped their game since last season.
For the Modifiedsprints there will be added incentive on the track as the first round of the innaugeral "Christchurch Modifiedsprint Club Championship" will be contested. Breaking from tradition, this season long title will be run in a somewhat unusual format with only the first race of the scheduled nigths racing counting for points. "It's an unusual format that hopefully will keep things tighter" said Club President - Chris Mackenzie. "Heat One of the night is always marble drawn, so theres sure to be a mixed bag at the start every week. It also hopefully will compensate for the usual racenight casualties over the course of the night.....let's be honest come feature time you've generally lost a couple of cars - it wrecks any chance of them featuring in an on-going point collecting type title." Mackenzie went on to say.
The Championship has been set out so that it wont conflict with any other C.S.A. run titles, such as Canterbury Champs, Clay Cup and the likes. Theres also a great chance that rounds will be held at Ashburton, and Ellesmere once meetings at those tracks are finalised.
Gates open at 5.00pm, with racing set to get underway at 7.00pm - get yourself trackside to see the fastest speedway racing in the South!
30/10/09 - Brough Set To Fire!...
With the Ruapuna season just over a week away driver Keith Brough 26c is itching to get on
the track and amongst the action. Brough who by his own admittance had a dismal last
season at Ruapuna which often found the new Raceworks chassis parked on the infield, was
all smiles after the recent dress rehearsal at Ruapuna. Brough drove an immaculate race
and timed his pass to perfection to claim victory on that occasion, backing up a huge turn
in fortune after also performing exceptionally well at Ellesmere, Ashburton and Westport
after the conclusion of Ruapuna's 2008/09 season.

Keith Brough shows the style of his recent success.
It's not all good news out of the Brough garage however, Modifiedsprints.co.nz has been informed that Luke Brough will be standing down from driver duties leaving the 25c machine vacant this season due to some unforeseen circumstances. Keith Brough went on to say that he is keen to see the car hit the track and is looking to lease the car out for racenights....So if you want to join the action give Keith a call to find out more about this great opportunity on 0275 537 8184.
30/10/09 - More racing On The
Cards!... The Christchurch Modifiedsprint club has recently been approached
about making appearances at two of the locally based Canterbury tracks. Ellesmere Raceway
has opened an invitation to run at their successful Twilight meeting coming up on
Saturday, November 28th. The Modifiedsprints havent appeared at Ellesmere for some time
now, with a couple of meetings being cancelled due to weather, and a couple of times where
numbers were in-sufficient to appear. Ashburton Speedway are another of the regions tracks
wanting to see the "Small Wings Doin Big Things" at their track. The
Modifiedsprints last appearance at Ashburton was at the popular N.Z. mini-stock title
event, where many drivers showed interest in returning. Ashburton's meeting is pencilled
in for December 6th pending numbers. Interested drivers in either of these meetings should
pass their intentions onto Class Rep - Ben Crowe, or Club President - Chris Mackenzie, so
that these two meetings can be finallised.
19/10/09 - Chasin The Flag!...
Modifiedsprint Tv might currently be offline, but that wont stop modifiedsprints.co.nz
from bringing you some video coverage until such time that the application returns. Check
out coverage of the Modifiedsprint Feature at Ruapuna's final practice held on Saturday
night.
19/10/09 - Harris Looking Forward To
2009/10 Season!... A breif conversation with last seasons points champion
Darryl Harris has the 31c driver looking forward to a highly competitve season. When
questioned about looking out of sorts at Saturday nights practice, Harris admitted to
missing the cars setup, along with trying out a few new things as well. "That's what
practices are for....trying things, if they dont work you dont stand to lose a lot"
stated Harris. The Kaiapoi based driver was seemingly impressed by the step up in
competition he witnessed on Saturday night, "For six of the eight cars to finish on
the start/finish straight (and the others only just behind that) surely has to look good
from a spectators point." Harris went on to say.
There's no doubting that Harris will bounce back, and lets not forget that when "The Boy" Kieran Harris returns the family competition will drive the senior Harris to succeed even more....
18/10/09 - Modifiedsprint Drivers To
The Fore!... If last nights Dress Rehersal at Ruapuna is anything to go by,
this seasons racing is going to be a high speed and hotly contested affair. Eight cars
appeared for the final outing before opening night, and all were on the pace as a pack of
hungry drivers looked for a pre-season advantage over their rivals. Battles raged
throughout the entire field with racing close and anyone of the drivers within striking
distance of claiming the checkered flag first. It's very easy to say that the competitive
gap has severely closed up since last season - Hold On! It';s gonna be a ride and a half
this season!
Proving that the modifiedsprints are a great starting point for open-wheel speedway racing, several past competitors were also excelling in other classes. Rachel Melrose looked as quick as she has for some time now and chased current modifiedsprint driver (and double stinter) Tom Lumsden hard for a bulk of the TQ Midget Feature, before the cool/calm head of Glen Durie nabbed Melrose and then on the last corner dove deep inside an impressive Lumsden to claim the victory!
The Sprintcars also had former modifiedsprint drivers at the front with Danny Mayson putting in some impressively laps throughout the night before tripping up on visiting southlander Grant Lightfoot in the feature sending the 97c sprintcar into the wall before rolling to a stop, Mayson was ok and walked away from the incident. Also showing some good pace was Matt Honeywell, another to make the step up from modifiedsprints, easily storming away from the field to claim the second heat.
Something the think about.......One has to wonder how these drivers would get on without the modifiedsprint experience, or even if they would be racing at all!
16/10/09 - One Last Chance...
Drivers will get one last chance to put in some laps at Ruapuna speedway before the season
opens in early November. Saturday night will see the lights come on for the Dress Rehersal
(final practice) and will be the first chance for drivers to get some
"one-upmanship" over their fellow competitors in the mock racemeeting.
Saturday's Dress rehersal is down to start at 7pm and entry to Xpress printing House
Ruapuna Speedway is free.....what a great way to spend Saturday night!
16/10/09 - Busy Weekend...
Following on from Ruapuna's dress rehersal, some drivers may take in the "Club
Day" at Ellesmere Raceway on Sunday. These day's are often popular with driver from
all classes throughout speedway as a way to iron out car issues, or to simply get some
more laps under their belt before the summer season gets underway. As with Ruapuna, entry
to spectate at ellesmere is free!
11/10/09 - The Prediction Was
Right... As reported on Modifiedsprints.co.nz the other day it looked as if
the weather would be the winner for Saturday afternoons second practice session, and the
prediction was right. Constant rain overnight made the track un-preparable, and even the
sunny bursts on the day couldnt dry the track out enough to let the session go ahead. The
Christchurch Speedway association has now re-scheduled the second practice to Wednesday
evening (14 October) starting at 5.30pm. Entry to watch is free!
9/10/09 - The Forcast Looks grim...
Ruapuna Speedway will echo to the sound of screaming engines once again this saturday
afternoon as the second practice session of the 2009/10 season takes place. As previously
noted by the "The Crowe" numbers at the first practice
were less than expected across the board, however as is the norm, first practices are
generally low on numbers - it's hopeful that this weekends practice will have a bigger
turn out. The weather however could put a stop to it all, with a grotty forcast in place
for the weekend. If the session goes ahead entry into the stadium is free to all.....
9/10/09 - More Practice Laps?...
Ellesmere Raceway has notified modfiedsprints.co.nz that their next scheduled meeting will
now be a "Club Day" to be held on Sunday October 18. These days are a great
chance for drivers to get in some more practice, or give their car a shake-down before the
2009/10 season begins at Ruapuna. Scrutineering is between 10am-12pm with on track action
starting at 1pm. There will be a $10 fee for drivers who wish to take part in this day to
help cover ambulance costs. Spectators are welcome and entry is free!
8/10/09 - From The Crowe's Nest...
In the first of what will hopefully become a regular column on modifiedsprints.co.nz,
Class Rep - Ben Crowe brings you an insight "From the Crowe's Nest". In
this instalment, Ben gives us a quick run-down on the first practice session at Ruapuna...
First Practice
delivers action....
Ruapuna Speedway opened its gates to competitors for the first time this season last
Saturday when the Christchurch Speedway Association held the first official practice for
the 2009/2010 season. Most classes saw small fields, and the Modifiedsprints were no
exception with just three cars out making their season debuts. Returning were 2nd year
drivers Chris Parker and Luke Brough, who were joined by Rookie driver Anthony Dawson.
Dawson, who purchased the ex Jeremy Harley 8c car over the off season quickly proved to be coming to grips with the car even battling with Chris Parker for several laps during the day. Chris Parker's well publicised acquisition of the ex Glen Sole Henchcraft Suzuki is already paying dividends, and the 4c Propa Ganda sponsored machine showed good pace and tidy lines all day. "I'm still getting my head around it all, but it's a very good car to drive." explained the North Canterbury driver. Parker only had one mishap for the day, dramatically riding up the wall off turn 2 before landing back on all four. That incident resulted in a broken Jacobs ladder, after the slick surface dished up for the final session caught out everyone on the track.
Luke Brough was the fastest driver on the track for most of the day, showing considerable improvement on last season. Brough's day however took a U turn after he spectacularly backed the 25c Henchcraft hard into the wall at turn 1 in the final session, another casualty of the very slick surface. Despite the intensity of the impact, damage appeared to be minimal, and the car could possibly be back on the track for the next practice in a weeks time.
Despite only 3 cars in attendance, the Modifiedsprint class was also represented with Keith Brough and Kieran Harris who were present with the Total Sprintcar Experience Two Seater. Harris had his own Total Sprintcar experience behind the wheel of the unique promotional vehicle, and impressed some of the onlookers on his maiden drive.
The second official Practice day takes place this Saturday (10th October), where a larger Modifiedsprint contingent is expected to be on track. First session starts at 2pm, and entry is free.

8/10/09 - Modifiedsprint TV Issues...
Regular visitors may have noticed that the Modifiedsprint TV feature has been removeed
from the site. Unfortunately the costing to keep that service running was deemed
prohibitive and as a result the media player was removed. Modifiedsprints.co.nz is
currently looking into an alternative way to bring you some video coverage...
6/09/09 - Boys Day Out 2009...
Canterbury turned on a brilliant and sunny day for the "Boys Day Out" exhibition
held on Saturday September 5th. The Christchurch Modifiedsprint Club made an appearance
with a stand that was well visited throughout the course of the day. An estimated 10,000+
people visited the outdoors exhibition featuring a host of "blokes" related
exhibits. Reports from the club members on the stand were of a positive note, with a lot
of interest being shown in both the class and the Ruapuna Speedway scene as well.

Setup And Ready - From the outset there was interest.
One lucky winner walked away at the end of the day with a "Total Driver Experience" kindly donated by Keith Brough of www.totalsprintcarexperience.co.nz - Kimberly Foud was the winner of the Total Driver Experience after getting behind the class and buying a ticket in the raffle, and numourous kids were handed stickers and maybe even the chance to become a "speedway star" by sitting in the modifiedsprint of Darryl Harris.

A Star Of The Future? - One of the many children who sat in the 31c machine
The Display featured three cars from the class, Darryl Harris (31c) had his newly liveried car on hand along with Andre Goldsmith's (41c) machine - which was placed under an easy-up with panels and wheels removed to simulate a "garage" scene and allow interested parties to see whats under the bonnet of these cars. Finishing off the display was Keith Brough's (26c) Raceworks machine, which was signed up with advertising for the Total Sprintcar Experience/Total Driver Experience. This machine would make a brief morning appearance in the demo pit as young-gun driver Kieran Harris took the car for a "slow" spin around the arena before putting in a few donut performances. Unfortunately due to the somewhat dusty ground conditions a higher profile afternoon showing had to be cancelled. Finishing off the display was rolling footage of some races and crash sequences, which proved popular with those who were captured by the sound coming from the easy-up.

On Show! The "Garage" (Left) - Andre Goldsmiths machine. and "Race Ready" - Darryl "Glossy" Harris.
The Christchurch Modifiedsprint Club President - Chris Mackenzie would like to take this chance to thanks the following club members, and people who made the display possible. Rob Strickland and the BDO crew - for putting on the event. Darryl Harris, Andre Goldsmith, Keith Brough - for cars and services to help with the display, William Gardiner - for designing and making the modifiedsprint display board. Ben Crowe and Kieran Harris for their input and manning the stand throughout the day. The guys at Xpress Printing House for providing Modifiedsprint flyers....and finally thanks to everyone who dropped by the stand to show interest in one of the fastest classes in speedway.
31/08/09 - Gettin' The Ball
Rollin'... With the 2009/10 Ruapuna season fast approaching, attention
switches to promotion, and the Christchurch Modifiedsprint Club is currently kicking it
all off with a display at The Northlands Shopping Centre. Not only is the immaculately
presented modifiedsprint of Chris Parker on display, but right along-side it sits the
Total Sprintcar Experiences' two-seater sprintcar.

When the opportunity arose for the modifiedsprint club to host a prime spot in the mall, it was greatfully accepted and the display furthered by the addition of the Ruapuna based two-seater, and of course some promotion for the Xpress Printing house Ruapuna Speedway. Visitors to the stand can enter a competition to win a twin-seat experience for dad (after all what dad wouldnt like the trill of hurtling around the Ruapuna oval at break-neck speed) or can simply book a ride in the two-seater or a drive in one of the exciting modifiedsprints.

So get yourself on down to Northlands Shopping Centre (55 Main North Rd, Papanui) to have a look over the cars, chat to the display attendants - enter the competition, or buy the ultimate gift for fathers day!
